Character profiles

村雨 純夏, Murasame Sumika

Growing up in her family’s karate dojo, Sumika has been dubbed a karate genius. She is the strong, cool, athletic, popular, and intelligent class representative. She is secretly in love with her best friend Ushio, and she often tries to be “cuter”: she quits karate, she attempts to pull off one those girly outfits you’d only see in anime and manga, she tries to be clumsy by almost forcing herself to be clumsy and slip on a banana peel.

Underneath her tough appearance, Sumika constantly suffers from Ushio’s random ins and outs of love with any cute girl she sees. She is a devoted friend, always there for Ushio every time she gets her heart broken, but Ushio remains oblivious to her feelings.

Sumika lives with her father, her brothers, and their housekeeper—who often claims to have raised Sumika from childbirth. She teaches at the dojo run by her family.

Despite being a very capable martial artist, she is blind as a bat without her glasses.

風間 汐, Kazama Ushio

Transferring to Sumika’s junior high school, Ushio was initially well liked because of her cuteness (and, according to the male half of the population, her boobs). Eventually, word got out that Ushio only likes cute girls and she found herself alienated, eating lunch by herself. Enter Sumika, who says that because she is not “cute” she doesn’t have to worry about Ushio falling in love with her.

Ushio lives in a messy apartment cramped with books with her older brother, who writes yuri novels under a pen name. She is a very good cook, taking care of her brother, who often works over time to make ends meet.

Ushio often gets one sided crushes, falling in love with every cute girl she happens upon. She always gets hurt in the end—she develops a crush on an underclassman she works with, she becomes infatuated with a cute model (who, unbeknownst to her, is her classmate Masaki cross dressing to attract Sumika).

She is completely oblivious of Sumika’s feelings for her, unconsciously commenting on how she isn’t her “type” and hurting her, although she considers her a very special friend.

蓮賀 朋絵, Hachisuka Tomoe

Hachi, as Sumika calls her, is also in Ushio and Sumika’s class. She is a lesbian and is in a relationship with classmate Taema Miyako. Claiming that high school is all about the club activities after school, she attempts (and fails) to start a Girl’s club for “girls-loving girls who had no choice but to enter a co-ed school,” roping Ushio and Sumika into her schemes. After her plans to start a Girl’s club gets rejected, she moves on to convincing Sumika to start a karate club.

Both Hachi and Miyako become very good friends with Sumika and Ushio because of their attempts to start a Girl’s club, and Hachi thanks Sumika, telling her that it’s hard to find friends because of her relationship with Miyako. Hachi is very showy of her relationship with Miyako, not caring about what everyone thinks of her sexuality. Basically, she won’t take anyone’s crap.

Two years older than everyone in school, Hachi took a couple years off to train for sports. Because of her age, she often shows a more mature personality than all the other characters—giving advice and speaking wise words about love and relationships.

She is the only one to ever beat Sumika in a sport (swimming).

当麻 みやこ, Taema Miyako

In a relationship with Hachi, Miyako is very popular with the boys in her school, who call her “princess.” She appears to be the epitome of a “cute” girl—clumsy and innocent—but she is actually very different from how her classmates perceive her. She is very mischievous and ill-mannered, often bad mouthing and teasing other people. She can be childish at times, a stark contrast from Hachi’s mature personality.
Hachi is able to tame her down, and they are always together. Miyako is very secure about her relationship with Hachi, cheering her on when she kisses another girl to scandalize several classmates who were taunting them. Their relationship prevented both Miyako and Hachi from forming any close friendships with any of the girls in school, this only changing after they met Ushio and Sumika.

蒼井 あずさ, Aoi Azusa

A rather peculiar classmate of Ushio and Sumika, Azusa is a very devoted yuri fan who practically worships the enigmatic author Orino Masaka (who is actually Ushio’s older brother). Sumika is aware of Azusa’s obsession with Orino and the truth about Ushio’s brother, but she decides against telling Azusa and crushing her spirit. She writes a lot of yuri doujinshi and she attends yuri themed events, cosplaying and selling her stories. Azusa also admires Sumiko, who kindly agrees to write a doujinshi with her and attend a yuri convention instead of going to the beach with Ushio.

Azusa has an idealistic view of love—she firmly believes that the love between two girls is pure and fragile and should be hidden from everyone else’s prying eyes. She finds Hachi and Miyako’s relationship to be flagrant and appaling, and she berates the girls for having such “scandalous” conversations. Hachi kisses her to provoke her, earning a smack from Azusa.

朱宮 正樹 / 山崎 アケミ, Akemiya Masaki / Mayasaki Akemi

Masaki is the small and incredibly shy vice class representative who does Sumika’s bidding. He is very much in love with Sumika, and he even confesses to her that he finds her cute (Sumika pushes him up against a wall threateningly in shock).

He figures out early on that Sumika is, in fact, in love with Ushio and he decides to cross dress in order to attract Sumika. His forceful and opinionated younger sister finds out and she sends his pictures to a modeling agency, forcing him to model against his will. Ushio starts crushing on Masaki’s alter ego Akemi after she sees his picture in a magazine.

Charlotte Munchausen

Lotte, as everyone calls her, is a “cute” German girl who moves to Japan in order to learn karate from Sumika and her family. She is very determined to become as strong and cool as Sumika, who she admires and “loves” for who she is. She studied Japanese intensely, wanting to embrace the culture of the country as much as she can. In school, she walks around in a gakuran in order to “preserve the Japanese spirit.”

She is small and looks like she is only in elementary school. Blessed with blue eyes and wavy blond hair, Ushio comments that she looks like an angel and she falls in love with the German girl the moment she sees her. Despite her sweet appearance, Lotte speaks in a very brash manner. Naïve and innocent, Lotte is constantly tricked by Ushio into wearing cute outfits.

She lives with Sumika and her family.

鳥追 きより, Torioi Kiyori

Friends with both Ushio and Sumika, she often eats lunch with them. She is always happy and always hungry, never appearing without food in her hand.
